Naive Path tracer produces much darker images than Explicit light sampling
It looks like you're clamping all your samples to 0-1 in line 215. Apply clamping only when displaying the image, not when accumulating samples.

Path tracer - multi layered materials and importance sampling
Wenzel Jakob et al presented a framework for layered Materials at SIGGRAPH 2014. Section 6.2 explains importance sampling. If you prefer code over equations, the method is implemented in the Mitsuba r …

Phong BRDF in Mitsuba, Tungsten and AGI
It's the normalization factor to make sure the BRDF always reflects the same amount of energy regardless of the value of the specular exponent n. Without that factor, changing the specular exponent ch …

About the use of Russian Roulette in Smallpt
The reflected and transmitted values need to be scaled because they are not sampled proportionally to their contribution. You'll notice how the decision whether to reflect or transmit is made based on …

Challenges of Offline Rendering
Since you've used the "path tracing" tag, I'm assuming you're thinking mainly about light transport. At SIGGRAPH 2015, there was a course on the topic of path tracing in movie production that may be i …
